Abraham Louis Hankin, the son of Russian immigrant parents, was born in Philadelphia in 1920. He received B.A and M.A. degrees in public and business administration from U.C. Berkeley. He was a prisoner of war in the Philippines and Japan from 1942-1945. He achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, working as a financial specialist in the United States, Europe, and Libya. Near the end of his life he received the Purple Heart. He died in 2006 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetary.
